Project Proposal

Songwriting during a pandemic: how is space revisited?

Project Proposal: Welcome
Records

Stemming from my ongoing interest in music production & singing, my Integrating Activity project will take the form of a “Genius Verified” interview for which I will be writing the lyrics to an original song and singing it.

I intend to base my lyrics around a common theme of space and perhaps isolation and within each verse/chorus, going deeper into a specific theme. I would like to include a verse/chorus to tackle issues of home, the outside, and loss of touch with reality, especially during a pandemic. The chorus needs to be strong and poignant which I intend to achieve by either documenting my feelings metaphorically or addressing the pandemic as though it was a person, an ex. I want to use this song to reflect how I’ve been feeling through these hectic times and hopefully help others feel like they’re not alone. For the final product, I want to produce my own “Genius Verified’ video where I will be singing verses a cappella and explaining the lyrics after every verse probably through a Zoom recording.

The reason I chose the Arts & Culture program at Dawson is because I wanted to experiment with different forms of art and find which art form I was truly passionate about, and I found my calling in music. Through the music classes I’ve taken at Dawson, I’ve had the chance to dip my foot into different realms of music I hadn’t considered before (poetry, music composition, singing). Choosing songwriting as my final project would be coming full circle because I wrote my first song in my first semester at Dawson and it would allow me to showcase how much I’ve learned and improved throughout my journey at the college.

For the final video, I will need the classic Genius background which is a bright yellow color. I may decide to animate the lyrics, so they appear on the screen as I’m singing them, but this may prove to be too time-consuming. I will also need video software to record the “performance” for which I will most likely use Zoom.
